There are 26 drawings for machine applique in this pattern, including a family of quail, a mule, lots of different cactus, a roader runner, two rattlesnakes, a badger, a pony, an armadillo, and a red fox among them. The quilt in the photograph measures 36 1/2" x 62".

Anne keller said " I made this about 2 years ago for a quilt show to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the California State Park system." She made the quilt around 2014. The photos that follow are from a different quilt. Badger details.	With a pastel variegated rayon thread I chose the honeycomb stitch to detail the rattelsnake's skin texture then I satin stitched the edges and the rattle. The fabric is a batik for the snake.	The horse's colors don't show the stitching well...use straight stitching and the darning foot to get the texture of the main and tail. Just imagine the needle is a pen and try to replicate the direction the hair would be flowing. Use smooth curving lines.
The deer's antlers are satin stitching over the fabric. Note how you can tell which prongs are in front and which is back (further from you). All the parts that are closer to you get stitched last.	Nowadays, I would definitely use straight stitching with the darning foot to draw the stripe of the skunk's back and tail. Still this is more delicate than if I had used an applique of white for the stripe.	Mule details. In case you are wondering, the thread I used to quilt the entire quilt was a metallic pastel variegated from Sulky threads, in blue, gold and silver. By using one thread throughout, I didn't have to rethread for each block as I did on my earlier quilts, changing the color to match the background.
More zigzag stitching with the darning foot for a fluffy tail.	I used zigzag with the darning foot to color the white fur on the tummy area. You could also try straight stitching to draw the fur.	I used a star stitch on my sewing machine to stitch the details of the needles on these prickly pear cactus. I stitched one and moved away 1/2 inch and stitched another. Then I cut the threads that connected the stars and left them dangle, rather than cutting it close to the fabric.
