This pattern is great for beginners. It was designed by my assistant Kristi Gray and is her first quilt. When she wrote the instructions, she described things that she needed to know to be able to make this quilt . The Ladybugs are satin stitch applique-ed and the black spots are reverse applique (holes in the wing cover fabric revealing the black body fabric to make the spots). There are only five ladybugs so the pattern is do-able in a short amount of time. The quilt measures 10 1/2" x 37" and it would be a great table topper or wall hanging as it doesn't seem to have a specific place that would be described as the top. You don't need to be accurate in the crazy piecing either...just whack off corners of the applique-ed blocks and sew on some strips. What could be easier?
The most likely explanation that ladybugs are lucky is their dietary habits. Ladybugs eat harmful crop pests, so the appearance of ladybugs would have been welcomed by farmers and gardeners.
